Top 5 Fishing Report

29 Aug, 2008
Fishing report updated monthly
Got One

Regular reports from customers and fellow fisherman this time of year often include excellent Pink Snapper from all the usual spots up and down the coast. Places to target - northern end of the Five Fathom Bank & behind Carnac Is. also in Cockburn Sound itself. The jetties at Palm Beach & Rockingham are worth fishing also the North Mole & City Beach Groynes after a blow. Try just outside & inside the 3-mile reefs from Scarborough to up past Ocean Reef/Mindarie, and the occasional fish can be caught at Hillarys north wall and Ocean Reef Marina. The secret - use plenty of burley.

Make the most of the Snapper fishing opportunities this month because the Pink Snapper spawning congregations in Cockburn and Warnbro Sounds are due and the Pink Snapper fishing closures (Oct 1st to Dec
15th) will soon apply.

For those who enjoy cephalopods (Squid) you will find plenty in Cockburn Sound, outside Carnac Island, and over the weed beds north and south of Hillarys Boat Harbour. Nice size Pike are also in the same areas.

Boaties should also encounter Dhufish close in from Ocean Reef to Two rocks and on the 5 Fathom Bank. Look out for some big Leather-Jackets and Skippy over the same ground.
King George Whiting are also a prime target at this time of year and they can be found all over the place. KG's are regularly caught in Cockburn Sound, around the Stragglers, just east of Philip Rock, along the 5 Fathom Bank, in 30m of water off Hillarys, and just outside the 3 mile reef up near Ocean Reef.

Most off-shore reefs are potential haunts for Samsonfish with the bigger fish seeming to be a little further north off Two Rocks. There are plenty of smaller Sambos to be found on the 3 mile reefs, at the Gemini Barge off Mindarie, of West End at Rotto, and along the 5 Fathom Bank.

Shore based fishers are not left out in September as they can target the Winter/Spring Tailor which are best fished for in the early mornings right along the coast from Yanchep to Mandurah! Locations such as the Trigg Blue Hole, Yanchep Lagoon, Club Capricorn, Mindarie, Pipidinny Reefs, Looneys north of Two Rocks, Dutch Inn Grove at Cottesloe, Swanbourne, and Radar reef at Rottnest are all productive. There are also "Chopper" tailor in the River between Rocky Bay and the Traffic Bridge and we have even been catching them inside Hillarys Boat Harbour!
Herring are plentiful at similar locations and Garfish are around in the more sheltered areas as well. Bonito are also a worthwhile target at the North Mole.

For river fisho's, Black Bream are likely to be caught upstream at the Maylands, Belmont, and Nedlands areas as well as the Canning Bridge and the Narrows. Try and avoid the full moon though.
Occasional Flathead are available (usually in decent sizes) on the sand flats around East Fremantle and Karrakatta Bank.

If you are keen on a night fishing expedition (and the weather's OK) now is the time to think about an all-nighter in Cockburn Sound chasing that elusive monster Mulloway as well as a Pink Snapper or two. A high tide plus the New Moon is arguably the best time to try.
Don't forget to bring something to keep you warm!

Don't forget the Trout and Redfin fishing available in our local dams and SW rivers. Some of the closer places to go include Harvey, Drakesbrook, and Waroona Dams. Ask the staff at Got One Woodvale for the latest info on where the fish are and which lures or flies are working the best.

Winter is on its way out so clean the cobwebs off your fishing gear and make the most of the spring weather!

Kind Regards, Charlie, Colleen, Matt, Brody, Paul, Darren, Tim, Brent, and Tamara, Your Got One Woodvale Team.
